Cynthia Block will become the first woman to lead the city of Saskatoon as its next mayor.
Elections Saskatoon released official results on Thursday.
Block garnered more than 30,000 votes and finished more than 10,000 votes ahead of second place mayoral candidate Gordon Wyant.
“I’m very much looking forward to see who the new council will be and having an opportunity to get to know them,” said Block late Wednesday.
“I think that when we can move forward with respect and I think that that has been, you know, a hallmark of our of our consulate in Saskatoon. And it’s something I’m very proud of that we figure out ways to disagree respectfully as we also try really hard to make good decisions for our city.”
Block was first elected as a councillor for Ward 6 in 2016 and has served eight years on city council.
“I am honored. I think representation matters. I want every woman and girl to know that they can lead. And I know that means in all leadership roles and in all houses of leadership. But ultimately, I think that what connected most with residents in this campaign had to do with the vision of our city,” said Block.
Block has lived in Saskatoon, specifically Ward 6, for more than 25 years.
She graduated from the University of Saskatchewan and worked in media and communications before moving into politics.
The other candidates in Saskatoon’s mayoral race include former mayor Don Atchison, Cary Tarasoff and Mike Harder.
