Province transfers housing complexes to Sagkeeng First nation

A major milestone has been reached in getting housing for First Nations people in Winnipeg.

The Sagkeeng First Nation Housing Authority will soon take over two Manitoba Housing complexes previously run by the province.

They’re located near the University of Manitoba.

The transfer of property management will see more than 100 units change hands, ranging from one to five-bedroom units.

The province says the move delivers much needed housing for First Nations individuals who choose to live off-reserve.

“It will be providing that important thing that some of us take for granted – housing,” said Kerri Irvin-Ross, Housing and Community Development Minister. “A roof over our head. A warm and safe place to call home. It will be a place where children will grow up and where students will attend the U of M.”
