CALGARY- The Calgary Flames haven’t won a Stanley Cup in over two decades, but that’s not enough to keep Calgary off the list of the world’s ultimate sports cities.

Cowtown has been added to the shortlist for the 2014 Ultimate Sports City, an award that recognizes the best sports hosts. Rankings are based on a range of criteria including venues, instrastructure, security, marketing and the size and volume of events hosted.

“We are honoured and proud to have received this level of distinction from SportBusiness International,” said Marco De Iaco, vice-president of sport and major events at Tourism Calgary. “Being recognized as an Ultimate Sports City validates Calgary’s position as one of Canada’s top sport destinations and one of the top winter sport cities in the world.”

There are 30 cities on the shortlist, including Amsterdam, Beijing, Dubai, Warsaw and Auckland. Vancouver was the only other Canadian city to make the list.
