SASKATOON – Canadian Blood Services says over 2,200 appointments are needed in Saskatchewan over the next three weeks.

Extreme weather across Canada at the end of 2013 and so far in January forced the cancellation of 24 blood clinics or the loss of 1,200 donations.

“A blizzard may stop us in our tracks, but the need for blood keeps on going,” said Mark Donnison, vice-president of donor relations.

Recent cancellations combined with constant hospital demand have created an immediate need for more O negative donations.

“When seconds count, someone’s life is on the line and there’s no time to check a patient’s blood type, O negative blood is used,” said Donnison.

Canadian Blood Services says as many as 50 donors are needed to help someone seriously hurt in a car crash.
