A group of angry Richmond residents showed up at city hall today to protest their application to destroy two Rottweilers from the community.

In October 2013, the two dogs, Axle and Paris, escaped from their backyard. They wandered across the street and Axle ended up biting a construction worker on the leg. He did not draw blood, but left a mark. It appears the construction worker startled the dog.

After the incident, the dogs were seized by the city, which then submitted an application to have them put down.

“Based on that and some other information that the city has available to it, the dogs were seized and we sought an application to have the dogs destroyed,” says a spokesperson for the city of Richmond.

“There will be a court hearing in April and the judge will hear all of the facts on this case and will make the determination as to what the appropriate action is.”

The dogs’ owner says she is really concerned for her pets.

“I’m here to support my two lovely dogs, who is kept at the vets for two months, not allowed to see them,” says owner Prabjot Nijjer. “I want them free very quickly and come home.”

She says Axel was the dog that bit the man and she does not understand why Paris has to be punished as well.

“The bylaws manager says it’s because Paris was with Axel, that’s the reason.”

“I just want to set free my dogs.”

She is willing to go to court to fight the decision if necessary.

The spokesperson would not provide any more information, saying only the city has a history with the dogs and with the owners, but all of the facts will come out in the court hearing.
