A crash on Calgary’s Deerfoot Trail early Thursday shut down a portion of the freeway’s southbound lanes.
Police said the single-vehicle crash at Deerfoot Trail near Peigan Trail was reported at 3:36 a.m. and involved a van.
According to police, investigators believe the van was headed south on Deerfoot Trail when it hit a concrete barrier just south of the Peigan Trail off-ramp.
“The van then crossed the three southbound lanes of Deerfoot Trail before leaving the roadway, ultimately striking the bridge deck of the Peigan Trail overpass before rolling onto its roof,” police said in a news release.
“Police are investigating whether speed is considered to be a factor.”
One man was taken to hospital with serious injuries. Police later described those injuries as life-threatening.
Southbound lanes of Deerfoot Trail were closed between 17th Avenue and Peigan Trail. Just after 8 a.m., police said the southbound lanes had been reopened.
Police said anyone with images of the crash or information about it can call them at 403-266-1234 or anonymously submit a tip through Crime Stoppers.
