Williams Lake BC SPCA needs funds for abandoned puppy’s surgery

Samantha needs $800 to have her leg amputated before she can be adopted to a loving home. BC SPCA

Staff at the BC SPCA Williams Lake branch are raising money to give a puppy major surgery after being found abandoned and badly injured.

On New Year’s Eve, a five-month-old German shepherd-border collie cross was found badly hurt at a rest stop near Williams Lake.

The Good Samaritan rushed “Samantha” to a veterinary clinic where staff discovered the dog had a broken femur, an injury that was likely a few weeks old.

“We think she was probably hit by a car, and because of the extent of her injury the leg is going to have to be amputated,” said Liz Dighton, manager of the Williams Lake SPCA.

A veterinarian has offered to do the surgery at a reduced cost, but the SPCA still needs to raise about $800.

Staff said Samantha had no identification and no one has come forward to claim her. They are hoping to place her in a loving home after the surgery.

Dighton said Samantha loves people and other dogs.

“She is so excited to meet people and wiggles her whole body with joy when you see her. We really hope people will help us give her the best chance possible for a happy life,” she said.

Anyone who would like to help Samantha and other animals like her in need at the Williams Lake BC SPCA shelter can donate online or visit in person, at 709 Bond Lake Road, Williams Lake.
