Crews hard at work clearing Calgary’s residential streets

CALGARY- Crews have been hard at work for week trying to get all the snow off of Calgary roads, but it’s expected to take at least three more weeks.

On Friday, workers made it to the southeast community of Douglasdale—and residents couldn’t be happier.

“They are fantastic,” gushes Samantha Powell. “They came and woke us up because we had some vehicles on the road that were kind of in the way, and they were awesome. They were getting out of their machines to get the cars out of the way and clear things up.”

The city began removing snow from residential streets last week, which has been accumulating all winter.

“What we saw in six weeks of December and January is what I would normally see in January, February and March combined,” says director of roads Ryan Jestin.

311 has received over 15-thousand calls since the snowfall began—nearly double the number they normally get in an entire winter. Jestin is requesting that Calgarians mind their manners when phoning in.

“Just like you or I, they are interested in hearing the story and the problems but they really are not deserving of people that are not very polite or kind to our operators. It’s not our operators that are manning the plows.”

So far, about 132 thousand tones of snow has been removed—and crews aren’t done yet.

“This weekend I expect we are going to see really vast improvement in some areas,” Jestin says. “We have removed a tremendous amount of snow already I have been focusing on getting those school zones cleared up.”

225 pieces of equipment are currently working on residential streets.
