EDMONTON – The six-year-old child killed in a collision near Valemount, B.C. along with his father and younger sibling was a Grade 2 student at an Edmonton public school.

A spokesperson for the district confirmed the young boy was a student of Edmonton Public Schools.

The six-year-old was in a minivan with his father, mother, and two three-year-old siblings. The man and one of the three-year-olds were killed in the crash. The woman and the other three-year-old were rushed to hospital.

The crash happened Wednesday afternoon, on Highway 16 near Moose Lake overpass, about 40 kilometres east of Tete Jaune Junction.

RCMP say the driver of a minivan was apparently trying to pass a semi-tractor trailer when he lost control and swerved into the oncoming lane.

It’s believed the minivan was T-boned by another semi. The driver of the semi was not injured.

The woman and her three-year-old child are in stable condition and have been transferred to an Edmonton hospital.

The names of those involved in the crash have not been released.

“The road conditions on the highway were unpredictable. So, while there might have been some clearer spots, there definitely was some icy, snow-covered areas,” said Smith.

Smith says there have been 16 fatal collisions on the highway in the last year and that some of them were related to vehicles trying to pass on an unsafe stretch of the road, especially during unpredictable weather.

She says there are several designated passing lanes on parts of the highway.

“We have attended numerous fatal motor vehicle collisions, and we’re asking motorists to please slow it down, and wait for those passing lanes to come.”
