Edmonton – The City of Edmonton is asking residents to take their Christmas trees to the curb.

Starting Thursday, the City will start collecting un-bagged trees for recycling.

Pick up will take three weeks, but not necessarily on resident’s regular waste collection day.

There are a few necessary requirements for a tree to be acceptable for composting: all ornaments, tinsel, garlands, nails, screws, and tree stands must be removed, and extra large trees should be cut into two-metre lengths.

Apartment and condo residents are asked to take their natural Christmas trees to a community recycling depot or an Eco Station. The drop off is free until January 31. The City is asking apartment and condo residents not to place Christmas trees in or beside apartment recycling or waste bins.

Approximately 14,126 trees were collected for recycling in 2013. The trees are chipped and composted at the Edmonton Waste Management Centre.

The Reuse Centre accepts artificial trees, free of charge, as long as they are in their boxes and include all parts.

They will be made available to organizations and individuals for reuse.
