HALIFAX – Firefighters scrambled to downtown Halifax Wednesday night, but it wasn’t because of a blaze.

Just after 8 p.m., fire crews got called to a building alarm at Duke Tower, said Fire Captain Brian Fleckney.

Firefighters did not find flames but rather found smoke filling the 12th floor, which then spread to the 10th and 11th floors.

Fleckney said crews used thermal imaging cameras and temperature sensors to pinpoint the source of the smoke, which he said was similar to finding a needle in a haystack.

Then just before 10 p.m., Fleckney said firefighters found the source.

“It looks like the cause might be an air handling unit,” he said. “They’re still searching it out and when they confirm that, we will be here a little while removing the smoke from the floor.”
