REGINA – Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall is pursuing a plan to go beyond mining uranium and is eyeing the possibility of small nuclear reactor technology.

Wall is looking at a partnership with a private company to research whether a small reactor could fit into the province’s existing power grid.

The Saskatchewan government rejected the idea of allowing a large-scale nuclear plant to be built in December 2009.

Wall says the proposal was turned down because it didn’t make financial sense, not because of political pressure.

He says a small reactor could be part of a bigger agenda that includes nuclear study and nuclear medicine, including PET scans.

A PET scan uses positron emissions to produce three-dimensional images, but Saskatchewan doesn’t have a machine and has to send patients to neighbouring Manitoba.
