St. Paul’s Hospital remains on high alert today, with 11 new cases of illness connected with the outbreak of norovirus.
An outbreak has been declared in three of the hospital’s units since the first patient at the hospital became sick from the virus on Jan. 2.
The total number of cases has risen to 26 patients and 27 staff members.
Anyone exhibiting symptoms is now being treated as though they have the virus.
Additional precautionary measures are being used to treat 18 of the infected patients, but the rest of the patients have by now recovered from the symptoms, which include stomach cramps and discomfort, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea and can last 12 to 96 hours.
The hospital remains closed to visitors and the community, except for scheduled appointments or family members of critically ill patients.
The outbreak can be considered over once 96 hours has passed since the last patient or staff member demonstrates symptoms of norovirus infection.
