Nightmare for Winnipeg motorists

WINNIPEG – 2013 ended with a bang for many Winnipeg drivers and January is starting out the same.

Manitoba Public Insurance had 20,000 claims in December.

“It’s the worst December in 15 years if not more,” said Brian Smiley of MPI. “Again, statistically speaking, it’s not been good. We certainly aren’t happy to see it but we understand that the weather plays a role and we can’t control weather.”

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

With several more crashes on Winnipeg roads Monday, MPI had a very busy day. If you hoped to make a claim, you waited.

It was the same story for anyone needing vehicle assistance.

CAA Manitoba had more than 1,000 calls Monday for everything from flat tires to boosting batteries, and unless it was an emergency, the wait for help was up to 48 hours.

“Those kinds of service levels are not acceptable,” said Liz Peters of CAA.

Towing companies also reported varying wait times.

One alternative: try a super battery. At Absolute Autoguard, they’ll install a super-sized battery in your vehicle that can withstand extreme temperatures.

“The larger battery will perform better at lower temperatures than smaller batteries and give you more cranking amps, and people won’t get stranded,” said Chris Rees.

Every Peg City Car Co-op vehicle is equipped with one of them. The battery doesn’t need a block heater and will start, in most cases, without a problem in these conditions.
