MONCTON – Temperatures across New Brunswick dipped to around -30 C on Thursday, and residents are taking precautions to deal with the extremely cold weather.
Steve Cunnigham, a municipal trash collector in Moncton, says working in the cold weather is a challenge.
He says a 12-hour shift in the cold can be tough on workers and machinery.
“Your hands get cold and it also affects the truck. More mechanical breakdowns and it just makes it a little harder going,” he said.

Cunningham also said people leaving their garbage on high snow banks has also been slowing down their work.
The cold weather forced Moncton resident Stephanie Gartke to bundle up when she went on an errand to the bank.
“It’s so cold it takes your breath away,” she said.
People who weren’t working outside but still went outside said they had their own special ways to stay warm.
“Hot apple cider, hot chocolate — hot beverages,” said Devin Boudreau.
Even dogs had to be dressed warmly before heading outside.
“She has her jammies on that I made her and she has another fleece jacket on besides that, and her big fleece coat over that and her booties,” said Heather Johnson, owner of a greyhound named Peanut.
Johnson says her trick is to wear as many layers as possible.
As for Cunningham, he says he can handle working in the cold.
“We live in the Maritimes, right? So it’s part of the job.”
