Businesses, individuals fined for safety violations in Saskatchewan

SASKATOON – Two Saskatchewan businesses and two individuals have been fined for safety violations.

Ridge Riders Roofing of Saskatoon pled guilty in provincial court on Dec. 13, 2013 to three charges under occupational health and safety (OHS) legislation.

The company was charged after a worksite inspection in July 2011 found the company failed to ensure workers were using a fall protection system where they could fall three metres or more.

Ridge Riders Roofing was also charged for failing to provide or require workers to use appropriate protective headwear gear and failing to ensure all work at a place of employment was sufficiently and competently supervised. A fourth charge was stayed.

The company was fined a total of $1,880.

In a separate case, Henry Janzen Steel Buildings of Osler pleaded guilty in provincial court on Dec. 17, 2013 to one count of failing to use a fall system at a temporary work area where workers could fall three or more metres.

The charge came after workers were observed working on a church roof in Warman on April 12, 2012 with a fall protection system. A second charged was stayed.

The company was fined $840.

Eric Remus, the owner of Saskatoon-based Completely Hammered Framing, was found guilty for failing to ensure workers were using a fall protection system where they could fall three metres or more.

A worker was seen installing material on the peak of a second story roof without a fall protection.

Remus was fined $840 in provincial court on Dec. 18, 2013.

Also on Dec. 18, Dave Hamm from Hepburn was fined $840 for failing to ensure proper fall protection at a worksite.

An OHS officer saw an individual working on the roof of a home in Saskatoon on Oct. 12, 2012 in violation of the code.
