Water levels in the town of Wainwright, Alta., reached a “critical” state Friday morning due to ongoing supply issues, prompting officials to declare a local emergency.
“If we do not reduce our water use, we are at risk of running out,” a town notice read. “We need your help!”
The town said the shortage was due to an ongoing pump mechanical issue. An Alberta Emergency Alert, issued shortly before 11 a.m. Friday, said the issue was a result of 1st Avenue improvements, which began in early May.
It impacted the town’s ability to provide water to residents. The town was also looking to ensure adequate water was available to support firefighting needs.

In an update Friday evening, the town said it had re-established its water supply.
“A state of local emergency remains in place as water levels remain low,” the town said, adding “it is essential that the public continue to reduce water use until the levels rise.”
Earlier Friday, Carley Herbert, a town information officer, told Global News the issue was affecting local reservoirs. It was brought to the town’s attention late Wednesday afternoon, she said.
She said officials issued a notice to residents on Thursday, asking them to conserve water. The situation worsened Friday morning, leading to the town declaring a local emergency, she said.
Town officials urged people to use water only for essential purposes. Residents, businesses and visitors were asked to limit showers and flushing toilets, avoid doing laundry or washing dishes and reduce indoor water consumption.
A mandatory outdoor water ban was also put in effect. Residents were advised not to water grass, plants and trees or wash outdoor surfaces.
Wainwright is about 200 kilometres southeast of Edmonton.
