First, they were ripped off by a contractor who didn’t pay them for work they did this fall. Then, they lost everything they owned in a trailer fire in Oyama this week.
It hasn’t been the best of holidays for two east coasters who now living in the Okanagan. But they are still alive to tell their tale.
“Once it started flaming it was just, whoosh,” says Shane Monroe, who was making dinner Wednesday night in their trailer at the Wood Lake Terrace campground when a pan of grease went up in flames.
“Ivan was lying in bed,” says Monroe. “I yelled at Ivan to open the door.”
“I ran for the door and tried to unlock that damn door and that door didn’t want to unlock,” says Ivan Savoie.
The two men say the flames were shooting 10 metres into the air as they finally managed to open the door. But as the flaming pan was thrown into the snow, the grease landed on Savoie and he caught fire.
“My burns are all over my arms and the side of my face and my back,” says Savoie.
The men have been given clothing to get them through the next few days, but all of their other worldly possessions were destroyed in the fire.
if you can help the two men in any way, contact the manager of the wood lake terrace campground – Derek Niewinski – at 869-8505. He is putting them up at a borrowed trailer for the time being.
