Search continues for New Hamburg boy believed to have fallen through ice

NEW HAMBURG, Ont. – Authorities are still searching for a young New Hamburg boy who is believed to have fallen through the ice in the Nith River, west of Kitchener.

On Thursday search teams had focused their efforts on an area where it appeared someone had gone through the ice. The search was called off at 10 p.m. for safety reasons.

Police and firefighters resumed their search Friday morning as part of a recovery operation.

The five-year-boy, identified as Robbie Reiner, wandered away from home without his coat Thursday and headed to the river late in the afternoon.

Police say while community support is appreciated, it’s too dangerous for the public to help them with the search.

Waterloo Regional Police concluded their search efforts just after 4 p.m. on Friday afternoon.

Ontario Provincial Police divers have arrived on scene but will not continue search efforts until Saturday morning.
