CALGARY- A northwest condo building had to be evacuated on Thursday, after a fire broke out in one of the ground level suites.

It happened over the noon hour, in the Edgecliffe Estates complex in Edgemont.

Flames and thick smoke could be seen billowing out of a unit near an entrance, and a second alarm was called in by fire crews.

“There was smoke pouring out to the hallways, my mom saw the flames,” says Mario Scverdija, who knows the people who live in the affected unit. “Right away we called the fire department.”

He adds that the people who live in the unit are “just devastated.”

Fire crews managed to contain the damage to one unit.

The Edgemont blaze was the second major fire they were called to on Boxing Day, with another breaking out just an hour earlier in the community of Mount Royal.
