Police are investigating a serious Sunday morning collision on a road at the boundary between the Enoch Cree Nation and west Edmonton.
The crash happened around 5:45 a.m. where the Whitemud Drive freeway turns into a single-lane country road (Highway 628) west of Winterburn Road, near 223rd Street.
Edmonton police said a GMC Sierra pickup truck was driving west on the road when it crossed the solid centre dividing line and collided with an oncoming Toyota Camry car inside the city limits.
Paramedics treated and transported the 28-year old man driving the Camry to hospital with serious, non-life-threatening injuries.
Police said a woman who was a passenger in the car was also taken to hospital for precautionary reasons, while a second female passenger was treated by paramedics and released at the scene.
Upon arrival, Edmonton police said EMS found a 44-year-old woman and 29-year-old man at the scene outside of the Sierra.
Police said two other men in the pickup, aged 23 and 19, initially fled the crash scene but were found in a nearby west end neighbourhood after calling 911 for medical aid.
Everyone in the truck was taken to hospital for assessment with no major injuries noted at the time, EPS said.
Police said it was unclear which of the four people was the driver of the pickup and impairment is believed to be a factor in the crash. Both vehicles are considered write-offs, EPS said.
Later Sunday morning, the destroyed silver truck was seen on the road and the crumpled white car was in the ditch on the south side of the road, which is Enoch land.
The EPS major collision investigations section took over the file, and officers could be seen investigating on the rural road throughout Sunday morning. Mounties said the road reopened just before noon.
Parkland County RCMP from the Enoch detachment, fire crews and EMS also responded to the crash.
