Update: Alcohol and speed may have been factors in fatal collision

Edmonton – A Monday night crash in north Edmonton has claimed the life of one person.

Police say a truck was travelling northbound on 127 Street went it struck a 2009 GMC Sierra, which was stopped at a red light at 135 Avenue, then collided into a steel post.

The 28-year-old female driver of the northbound truck died at the scene. A passenger inside of the truck was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The two people inside the GMC Sierra sustained minor injuries.

Police continue to investigate, however, believe alcohol and excessive speed may have been factors in the crash.

It’s the 26th fatality of the year in Edmonton.

It’s the second fatal collision at the 127 Street and 135 Avenue intersection during the past seven months.

In May, an 86-year-old man died after his westbound vehicle collided with a northbound Jeep Cherokee.

The 21-year-old driver of the Jeep was charged with careless operation of a motor vehicle.
