Police said the crash happened at around 3:30 a.m. Sunday in the eastbound lanes of Highway 401 near Guelph Line.

Investigators said the crash was a result of a vehicle driving the wrong way when a 28-year-old Milton woman was travelling westbound in the eastbound lanes of the highway.

The wrong-way driver then collided into a sedan driven by a 22-year-old Brampton man, police said.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene and the man was taken to hospital in life-threatening condition, police added.

A road closure was in place for the investigation but lanes in the area have since reopened.
