Machine gun seized in Coquitlam, bringing B.C. seizures this year to 130

After a four-month investigation, anti-gang cops have seized a machine gun and semi-automatic pistol, bringing the number of firearms seized this year in B.C. to 130.

“We’ve seen numerous successes over the last year,” said Sgt. Shinder Kirk, spokesman for the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit. “The indication to us is that we have had some impact, notwithstanding last weekend. We have seen a decline up to this point this year but we’re not so naïve to think that we’ve eradicated the issue of gangs and gang violence.”

Kirk was referring to the shooting rampage on Oak Street that left 10 gangsters and their associates wounded early Sunday morning.

In the latest bust, Johnathan Thomas Duguay, 27 and Mathew James Milando, 23 of Coquitlam face several firearms charges.

Kirk said the two accused are “relatively unknown” to police with no links to known gangs.

“They are independent operators, from what we’re seeing,” he said. “They may not have any direct ties to any particular group but they’re certainly involved on the periphery of this lifestyle and add to the instability. If we hadn’t come across these firearms, there’s a good chance they would have made it into the world of those individuals that are involved not only in the violence but also the gang lifestyle.”

A small amount of cocaine was seized and Duguay faces drugs charges.
