REGINA – It’s easy to get caught up in the holiday season, but nothing can dampen the Christmas spirit faster than becoming a victim of crime.
Regina Police say criminals often view the holiday season as an opportunity. “It’s hard to know the motivation of the individual,” said Elizabeth Popowich, of the Regina Police Service. “Several property crimes occur because someone wants that item to sell for other purposes, such as feeding an addiction.”
Before heading out the door, Regina Police are reminding people not to leave boxes or packaging that points to big-ticket purchases outside their home, and to always lock up.

If you’re away, ask a neighbor to get your mail and clear your sidewalk and driveway of snow to make the home appear occupied.
But houses are not the only target for thieves – vehicles can also be tempting.
“You have to remember that if your vehicle is running, the keys are inside and the doors are unlocked – that represents an opportunity for a thief,” said Popowich.
And in anticipation of Christmas day, thousands of holiday shoppers will be rushing through the malls. Officials are advising shoppers to safe guard your PIN code, remember to frequently check financial statements. It’s also a good idea to keep those purchases hidden.
“If you’re going to be taking packages out to the car, make sure you put them out of sight or just make a trip home,” said Popowich.
