REGINA – During the holiday season, many say it’s the thought that counts when it comes to giving gifts. And in theory, gifting an adorable pet seems like a good idea. But when you give a pet, you are also giving a huge responsibility.

The Regina Humane Society says gift-givers need to think carefully before putting a bow on a cat or a dog.

To minimize the amount of surprise pet gifts, the Humane Society will be closed from Christmas Eve until Boxing Day this year.

“An animal is not a Christmas present – it’s for life,” said Don Simons, of the Regina Humane Society. “It’s important because it’s a family decision.”

Other things to consider are the cost of taking care of the animal and the long-term situation of a family or friend. Often pets are given to kids, but the responsibility of caring for the animal falls on the parents.
