SARNIA, Ont. – Ontario Provincial Police say the eastbound lanes of snow-swept Highway 402 are now open from Oil Heritage Road east of Sarnia to Highway 401 near London, but motorists are being advised to stay off the roads and be careful if they are driving.
The highway was closed Monday and police, aided by the military, emergency workers and volunteers, spent Tuesday rescuing hundreds of trapped motorists.
Police say Highway 402 eastbound from the Bluewater Bridge in Sarnia to Oil Heritage Road remains closed but is expected to reopen later today.
Highway 402 westbound remains closed from Highway 401 straight through to the Bluewater Bridge.
"That’s where the bulk of our stranded motorists came from, westbound, and we have a lot of vehicles to clear up so that is going to take time," said Const. Dennis Harwood.
Emergency crews will continue to clear the remaining vehicles from westbound Highway 402 today and into tonight.
Police say many of the roadways in Lambton County are still impassable or treacherous, and are advising motorists to stay off of the roadways and to tune in to local media outlets for updates on road conditions.
"You’re going to be going from good weather to bad weather in the blink of an eye and that’s why we’re telling people to stay off the roadways," Harwood said.
"We still have problems in the area, but if you’re out there, drive to the weather conditions."
