TORONTO – It’s going to be a messy weekend, so you may want to take care of that Christmas shopping sooner rather than later.

Though temperatures are expected to rise Thursday and Friday, it’s going to be a wet one.

“The current forecast calls for rain mixed with snow and some ice starting Thursday night continuing Friday. This will leave a general five to 15 cm north of Toronto with a mix in the city,” said Global’s Chief Meteorlogist Anthony Farnell.

On Tuesday, Environment Canada issued a special weather statement in an effort to raise the awareness of what could be dangerous weather on the weekend.

“Temperatures then drop Friday night through Saturday, so anything that falls will likely be snow or ice,” Farnell said. “The bigger storm arrives on Sunday, and this is where the most uncertainty exists. Currently it looks like significant icing Saturday night through Sunday morning before a transition to rain.

“Some models are predicting 15 to 30 mm of ice or more in spots. This would also be a 30 cm-plus snow storm for cottage country and as far south as Barrie.”

If this system does indeed produce the amounts of preciptation in the current forecast, it could mean chaos for anyone looking to make their holiday travel this weekend.

Though the current models indicate that the event could produce a lot of precipitation, the exact track and amounts may end up changing as we get further into the weekend.

“There’s still lots of time and more than average uncertainty,” Farnell said.
