Mississsauga’s City Hall was abuzz with activity Tuesday morning as a council-mandated recount of votes cast in Ward 1 is finally underway, about two hours later than scheduled after some organizational delays in the morning.
City officials cannot confirm how long it will take, but say the process will continue until all ballots have been tabulated.
The highly scrutinized recount may have repercussions beyond simply confirming who will take the southeastern ward. Amid disputed allegations of widespread vote-tampering in Mississauga’s municipal election – which have spurred an investigation by Peel police – any discrepancies in the Ward 1 recount will hold greater significance.
The Oct. 25 vote saw incumbent Carmen Corbasson fall to newcomer Jim Tovey by a mere 129 votes. As one of her last acts on council, former councillor Carolyn Parrish moved a motion calling for the recount.
