Bike lane proposal for Macleod Trail divides Calgarians

While cyclists may love the idea, a city councillor says a proposal to turn one lane of southbound Macleod Trail into a bike lane, is ‘madness.’

The city says 12,000 cyclists use city streets regularly and that number would increase by adding the Macleod bike lane to the existing network, which includes 10 Street N.W.

Ward 4 Councillor Sean Chu disagrees.

“I drive there [10 Street] about twice, maybe three times a week,” says Chu. ”I see one, most of the time, no bike.”

The bike lane would run in the far east lane of southbound Macleod Trail from the Bow River downtown to 25 Avenue, south of the Talisman Centre. It would be the only designated bike lane in and out of downtown.

One cyclist told Global News, he likes the idea.

“It really is the preferable way to travel, in my mind anyways, as opposed to sitting in a car staring at tail lights.”

Some drivers aren’t as enthusiastic.

“During the morning rush hour, if you cut that [Macleod Trail] down, it will be chaos,” says Michelle Cook. “I can’t image anyone is going to be happy.”

The proposed bike lane is part of an overall plan for a network in key areas of the city.
