Grace’s gift will help homeless

WINNIPEG — She may be small, but four-year-old Grace Rea has taken on a big task: She’s making it her mission to help keep the homeless warm this winter.

Grace is collecting new and gently used mittens filled with treats for her project, Gifts of Grace.

“Grace means love,” she said in an interview with Global News on Sunday.

The four-year-old started the project after she visited Siloam Mission and saw the city’s less fortunate without mitts or gloves.

She has already collected more than 200 pairs of mitts and will hand deliver them to the mission with her family on Christmas Eve.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“At Christmas time a lot of kids are thinking about what they’d like to ask Santa for, they’re writing their Christmas lists, so any chance that we have to encourage our kids to be a giver and to think of others and to share is really a great thing to do,” said Candace Rea, Grace’s mom.

A sprinkler head inside Siloam broke on Thursday and soaked medical supplies, food and clothing donations.

Staff have been busy all weekend sorting through the damage and determine what can be saved.

The mission is always looking winter clothing. Executive director Floyd Perras said he is happy someone so young is helping.

“For someone to think about people’s hands and keeping them warm, plus also treats to keep your body and inside warm, and just wanting to be nice to people is just such a positive statement to be made by such a young person,” he said.

Donation boxes have been given to several schools.

Mountain Bean as well as The Meeting Place are collecting treat-filled mittens for the cause.
