ST. JOHN’S, N.L. – Tributes are pouring in for Danny Williams from federal and provincial politicians of all stripes after the Newfoundland and Labrador premier announced he’s leaving politics today.

Nova Scotia Premier Darrell Dexter says he regarded Williams as a strong leader who defended Atlantic Canadian interests.

Dexter says Williams stood shoulder-to-shoulder with Nova Scotia in battles the two provinces fought with Ottawa to retain offshore resource revenues.

Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty says Williams was a resolute defender of his province whose passion for public life made him stand out.

He is recalling Williams legendary persistence and his efforts to improve the economy of Newfoundland and Labrador, which became a so-called ‘have’ province during Williams’s seven years in office.

Federal Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff is echoing McGuinty’s sentiments.

He says Williams promoted the people of Newfoundland and Labrador with a tenacity unmatched in Canadian politics.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper says Danny Williams has been a "dominating force" in the politics of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Harper and Williams were often at odds with one another over offshore oil revenues.

But as the Progressive Conservative premier walks away from politics today, all of that seems like a distant memory, judging by Harper’s statement.

Harper says Williams is "a tireless champion" for the people of Newfoundland and Labrador who achieved a great deal during his seven years in office.

In 2008, the hugely popular Williams campaigned against Harper’s Conservatives in Newfoundland and Labrador.

The Tories didn’t win a single seat in the province.
