SASKATOON – The holiday season is supposed to be a time with family and friends and sometimes that means travelling to be with them.

There are many things to consider before you leave to celebrate Christmas this year.

Officials are reminding residents to take extra time to reach destinations ensuring a safe arrival.

“Make sure you always have your cellphone charged up or have a charger on board so you can stay in touch because communication is always key, having some emergency blankets, having some sort of nutritional supplements, also some auxiliary marking lights whether it’s flash lights or some sort of strobe beacon,” said Anthony Tataryn, Saskatoon emergency measures coordinator.

“Always stay with your vehicle, your vehicles a big easy object to find.”

The holidays can also be the perfect opportunity for predators. It’s a time when people have more valuable items around, more presents and more cash.

There are ways to secure homes before leaving it vacant for a few days.

“Have somebody to collect your mail, make sure somebody is clearing your sidewalks and your driveway so it looks like somebody is there, and you might want to invest in a light timer,” said Alyson Edwards, with the Saskatoon Police Service.

Homes aren’t the only target for thieves, vehicles can also be tempting.

“You don’t want to leave items out so people can see them in the car, I would suggest not even leaving them in the trunk, make sure you take them with you and keep them somewhere safe,” said Edwards.
