City of Vancouver issues extreme weather alert due to snow

A heavy snowfall has caused widespread traffic problems, with countless cars and even transit buses spinning out, widespread school closures, and many people deciding to stay home instead of braving a snowy commute. Alissa Thibault reports – Jan 17, 2024

The City of Vancouver issued an extreme weather alert Tuesday night that will last through Thursday due to the “feels like” temperatures being at or below zero.

It’s also urging those sleeping outside to come inside, having added extra shelter spaces and warming centres.

“Your safety is our top priority – please come inside and stay warm,” Mayor Ken Sim said on X, formerly known as Twitter.

The City of Vancouver also published tips on staying safe during winter weather.

Sarah Blyth, executive director of the Overdose Prevention Society criticized the city for not doing enough to support the community’s vulnerable population on X.

Tweeting out several photos during outreach work her organization did this morning of people sleeping on the streets, covered in snow.
