Pedestrian hit, police officer injured after stolen Vancouver cab crashes

WATCH: Vancouver police are investigating after a yellow cab was stolen and involved in several hit-and-runs Tuesday morning. Police say the first hit-and-run happened around 7:30 a.m. at Broadway and Kingsway - the driver then made it to Fraser and 37th Avenue, where a pedestrian was struck. – Jan 16, 2024

A pedestrian has been struck and one police officer has been injured after a stolen Yellow cab was involved in two collisions in Vancouver on Tuesday morning.

According to the Vancouver Police Department, the cab had been left briefly unattended and running near Main Street and Terminal Avenue just before 7 a.m.

The suspect stole it and within half an hour, was allegedly involved in a hit-and-run at East Broadway and Kingsway.

The driver then made it to Fraser Street and East 37th Avenue, where they struck the 22-year-old pedestrian, who was hospitalized.

Officers were able to stop the driver at Main Street and Marine Drive. One of them sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

The badly damaged Yellow Cab could be seen pulled up onto a curb outside the Hi Five Chicken before it was towed. Shattered glass and plastic littered the road, next to damaged police cruisers.

On Wednesday, police confirmed the 44-year-old driver was charged with one count each of theft of a motor vehicle, dangerous operation of a vehicle, and failure to remain at the scene of an accident.

He remains in custody until his next court date.
