Some local businesses thrive in bitter cold

REGINA – While some of us were hiding from the cold this past weekend, staff members at the Regina Battery Depot were busy making more than 500 sales. On Monday alone, 177 batteries were sold.

“It’s three times, just about four times, what we’d normally do in a day,” said Terry Potter, manager of the Regina Battery Depot. “When the cars don’t start, they can’t go Christmas shopping. That’s where we come in.”

However it’s not just vehicle batteries that are flying off the shelves. Cell phone and laptops also go dead in the cold weather.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“A lot of guys leave them in their cars and as soon as it gets this cold, it pretty much does them in,” said Potter.

Some indoor gyms are also getting a boost when even hardcore outdoor sports enthusiasts head inside when the temperature reaches 30 below.

“With the cold weather, I think people are just finding the alternatives for their outdoor activity pursuits,” said Dan Farthing, owner of Level 10 Fitness. “We do definitely see people attending to their fitness and activity by coming indoors.”

Some pet stores are also cashing in by offering some unique indoor activities for stir-crazy dogs.

“That’s been the story of the week, that we’re not able to get the dogs out for their regular exercise and runs as much as we’d like,” said Richard Morton, owner of Pawsitively Purrfect. “And they’re causing havoc in the house.”

Some of those toys on the market range from puzzles to yoga balls for your dog.
