Chances are most women will be attending at least one party throughout the holidays, whether it’s a work function or a New Years Eve celebration with friends.
If you’re still trying to figure out what to wear, we have some helpful hints.
The Dress
What kind of dress you wear depends on the type of holiday party you’re attending.
“If you’re looking for a really great dress that you can wear for different occasions, I would suggest a figure-flattering cocktail dress,” says Lisa Tant, Vice-President, Fashion Editor at Holt Renfrew. “I like them a little bit below the knee, but depending on your body type you can also have it above the knee.”
She suggests a ‘little black dress’ is a good choice for the holidays if you pair it with some statement accessory pieces, but you shouldn’t be scared to try on something bold and colorful.
Top trending holiday dresses for 2013 tend to be bright jewel tones like fuchsia, sapphire and emerald – or have lots of gorgeous embellishments like sequins and beading.
If you aren’t comfortable in a dress, try a women’s tuxedo suit.

“I love that look on women,” says Tant. “A velvet slipper and a tuxedo suit – It is so Katharine Hepburn, it’s so polished.”
Accessories
If you are going to sport a ‘little black dress’ this Christmas, try dressing it up with bold accessories.
“So much of what’s popular this season is glittery,” says Tant. “You can try a statement earring or a statement necklace – just don’t wear both of them together.”
Shoes
Don’t ever feel like heels are a must – especially if your Christmas party is on a work night.
“I know sometimes for me… at the end of a long day when I’ve been running around, the idea of putting on heels is a bit intimidating,” says Tant.
If you’re feeling frightened by the thought of teetering around in lofty pumps, don’t worry – there are plenty of sparkly and sequin-covered flats.
Outerwear
Let’s be realistic here: We live in Canada, it’s likely you’ll need to put on a coat before you leave the house. But what kind?
“If you’re all dressed up, nothing looks worse than pulling a parka on over-top,” says Tant.
She suggests a loose fitted winter coat, because it’s something you can layer under.
