1 dead, 2 injured in suspected Brentwood home invasion: ‘All the hallmarks of being targeted’

WATCH: Calgary police are on the hunt for suspects after two violent home invasions only 12 hours apart and separated by a few kilometres. One of them turned deadly, marking the city's first homicide of the year. However, as Carolyn Kury de Castillo reports, police don't believe they're connected – Jan 4, 2024

The Calgary Police Service confirms a deceased man and two injured people were found when officers responded to reports of a home invasion in a northwest neighbourhood.

The extent of their injuries has not been divulged.

According to police, officers responded to a home in the 0 to 100 block of Braden Crescent Northwest, in the community of Brentwood, shortly after 9 a.m.

“Upon arrival we located one deceased person and two other additional victims,” said Staff Sgt. Sean Gregson of the CPS homicide unit. “The two victims were transported to the Foothills hospital and remain in stable and serious condition.”

The homicide unit is leading the investigation into the incident.

“It has all the hallmarks of being targeted,” said Gregson. “What we’re trying to determine is who was the target.”

Neighbours told Global News an older couple live in the home and their son had moved in with them a short time ago.

One woman was surprised to learn of the death nearby but said there was unusual activity at the home Thursday morning.

“Living next door I had no idea that was going on,” said the neighbour whose name was withheld. “All I heard was a dog barking this morning — their dog, who usually doesn’t bark like that in the morning and they usually do stop him right away if he does.

“It continued on for a little while so I went out and checked and when I did he wasn’t barking anymore. So I gathered that they had just brought him into the house and that was all.”

Gregson confirmed that police had been called to the home in the past, but he believes officers had only been there once in the last 12 months and on another occasion prior to that. It’s believed the deceased was a resident of the home.

The Brentwood fatality occurred roughly 12 hours after three people were stabbed during a home invasion in the community of Banff Trail but Gregson said there’s no reason to believe the incidents are connected.

“We don’t see any immediate connection right now but we’re definitely not ruling that out, but at this time we don’t believe that they’re related.”

An autopsy has been scheduled for Friday.
