97% support for ADQ’s Gérard Deltell

GRANBY – Action démocratique du Québec leader Gérard Deltell has passed a party leadership confidence vote with flying colours.

Despite internal problems and competing right-wing movements, 400 party members endorsed Deltell’s leadership by 97.1 per cent.

The number was announced Sunday morning at a party convention here.

A beaming Deltell immediately hopped on the stage to thank the crowd.

“What a beautiful way to show we are more present than ever in our political actions,” Deltell said. “The ADQ is here to stay.

Deltell reminded them how far the party has come in the year he has been leader.

“Let’s be honest. A year ago, we weren’t there at all. Against hell and high water, we have always stood tall.”

Deltell showed no signs of backing down or apologizing either for comparing Premier Jean Charest a day earlier to a "godfather" figure.

In fact, he went farther, accusing him of “gagging” his membership and imposing "a law of silence."

Deltell said in the hallways of the Liberal convention in Lévis that Liberals say they want an inquiry into alleged corruption in the construction industy.

But once inside, in the face of their leader, they say nothing.

“The Liberal Party can well gag its members. The Liberal Party will never gag the ADQ. You have my word on that.”

The last time the ADQ cast confidence votes it was for leader Mario Dumont in March 2008. Dumont bagged a score of 94.8 per cent.
