Halifax 17-year-old jailed after driveby shooting

HALIFAX, NS – A Halifax teenager has been handed a six-month custody and supervision order on a gun charge.

The 17-year-old youth, whose identity is protected by law, was to stand trial in Halifax youth court last week on seven counts stemming from a shooting in Dartmouth last May.

Instead, the teen pleaded guilty to a single charge of being in a vehicle in which he knew there was a firearm.

The youth has been held at the Nova Scotia Youth Facility in Waterville since May.

Judge Tim Gabriel ordered him to serve four more months in secure custody, followed by two months of supervision in the community.

On May 27, someone in a Nissan Sentra fired shots at the driver of a Cadillac SUV on Main Street.

Officers chased the Nissan onto the Forest Hills Parkway in Cole Harbour, where it collided with another vehicle at Auburn Drive and came to a stop.

The occupants of the Nissan took off on foot; two people were captured nearby.

The 17-year-old was wearing a bulletproof vest and had a balaclava in his pocket.

The weapon used in the shooting was not recovered.

The Cadillac was found in North Preston with four bullet holes in it. Police don’t think the driver was injured.
