SASKATOON – After two consecutive days with wind chill warnings issued for the City of Saskatoon and surrounding area, residents should be bracing for more this weekend and into next week.

Wind chills are expected to hover in the minus 30s and minus 40s through the weekend with values approaching minus 50 Saturday morning.

Winds are expected to be fairly breezy both Saturday and Sunday and when combined with such frigid temperatures can make it feel 10 to 20 degrees colder than the thermometer reads.

Some parts of the province may see wind chill values in the mid-minus 50s early Saturday morning as winds start picking up at the coldest time of the day – just before sunrise.

Environment Canada issues wind chill warnings for southern Saskatchewan when the wind speed is forecast to be 15 km/h or greater and wind chill values of minus 40 or colder are expected to last for at least 3 hours.

Winds are expected to be stronger than 15 km/h for most the weekend with wind chills below minus 40 for most of the day Saturday and Sunday, therefore wind chill warnings can be expected right through until Monday.

With such extreme wind chill values comes the risk of hypothermia and frostbite.

Exposed skin can freeze in a matter of minutes with wind chills at or below the minimum warning criteria, so it is important to cover up completely before heading outdoors.

The deep freeze kicked in Monday on the backside of a low pressure system that brought winter storm conditions to parts of southern Saskatchewan and right now there’s no end in sight of the cold letting up.
