SkyTrain escalator took so long to fix because special parts were needed

If you are a SkyTrain user who crosses in and out of the downtown core, you have probably noticed one of the escalators at the Commercial-Broadway station has been out of service for months.

Well it is now fixed and Translink posted a photo on their Facebook page on Tuesday.

Spokesperson for Translink, Jiana Ling, says the escalator took so long to fix because it had multiple parts fail at the same time.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“Commercial-Broadway is the busiest station,” says Ling, “and the escalator is unique because we wanted to make it larger to handle the increased volume of people.”

She says when an escalator breaks down it usually takes two weeks to fix because Translink has the parts in their maintenance facility.

However, this escalator at Commercial-Broadway needed special parts shipped from all over Europe and then a special engineer to assemble the parts once they arrived.

“We understand it was a major inconvenience for people,” says Ling.

She did not know exactly how long the escalator was out, but postings on social media from transit riders say it was at least seven months before it was fixed.

“We wanted to ensure it was safely put in,” says Ling. “It usually takes 25 years for these items to need replacing. This one was only 11 years old.”
