‘Jeopardy!’ may have finally settled the debate on pronouncing ‘GIF’

TORONTO – This year a heated debate was sparked online: How does one pronounce the word “GIF?”

The difference between pronouncing the abbreviation for the animated image format with a soft “G” or a hard “G” has long since pitted geeks against each other. But Alex Trebek may have finally put an end to the epic battle.

On Tuesday night’s episode of “Jeopardy!” the question for Final Jeopardy read, “The inventor of this image format said the OED wrongly has two pronunciations of it – the right one is with a soft ‘G’.”

All contestants answered with the correct answer – “What is ‘GIF’.”

Trebek also pronounced the word with a soft “G.”
