TORONTO — Music mashup master Daniel Kim unveiled his annual Pop Danthology mix on Tuesday, blending 68 songs from the past year into one infectious track.
The five-and-a-half-minute mashup features singles by artists from Anna Kendrick to Zedd.
Kim, who hails from Vancouver, also used a number of Canadian voices in the compilation.
The mashup includes Toronto rapper Drake on “Hold On, We’re Going Home” and “Started From the Bottom,” London, Ont.-born pop star Justin Bieber singing on will.i.am’s “#thatPOWER,” Kingston, Ont.-born Avril Lavigne doing “Here’s to Never Growing Up” (co-written by Alberta’s Chad Kroeger) and Vancouver’s Trevor Guthrie providing vocals on Armin van Buuren’s “This Is What It Feels Like.”
Robin Thicke, son of Canadian actor Alan Thicke, is also featured.
What’s more, seven of the 68 songs were co-written by Canadians.
Halifax native Henry Walker helped pen Ke$ha’s “C’mon” and “Crazy Kids” as well as Katy Perry’s “Roar,” Britney Spears’ “Ooh La La,” Robin Thicke’s “Give It 2 U,” and the Miley Cyrus hit “Wrecking Ball.”
“Wrecking Ball” was also co-written by St. Catharine’s, Ont. native Stephan Moccio.
The mashup also includes the Pitbull and Christina Aguilera collaboration “Feel This Moment,” which was co-written by Winnipeg’s Chantal Kreviazuk.
Kim said he spent 180 hours to craft the mashup.
“A lot of planning is required in the making of Pop Danthology because not all songs fit nicely into one stationary tempo and key,” he explains on his website, where he breaks down the process of turning a year’s worth of hits into one song. “I had to use a total of 11 tempo changes.”
The hard work pays off, though, because Kim’s annual mashups are viral sensations. Pop Danthology 2012 has been viewed nearly 44 million times on YouTube.
