The Scleroderma Association of BC was founded in 1984 with a threefold mission: to promote patient outreach, support, and education; to raise public awareness and understanding of Scleroderma; and to encourage and support Scleroderma research in BC and Canada.

Scleroderma, also known as Systemic Sclerosis, is a rare chronic autoimmune disease of the connective tissue that affects both visible (skin) and invisible (internal organs) parts of the body. The condition is characterized by unusual fibrotic processes that result in increased collagen production and deposits in the skin, which led to the name Scleroderma, derived from the Greek skleros (hard) and derma (skin). Though it was first reported in the mid-1700s, it is still challenging to diagnose, and there is currently no known cure.

However, recent strides in research have led to more options for symptom management in many areas, providing hope and support for those living with Scleroderma. The Scleroderma Association of BC plays a vital role in providing education and support for patients, raising public awareness, and funding research to advance our understanding of this disease.

Proudly supported by Global BC.
