For over four decades, OYR has been pushing the boundaries of live performance. Known for their innovative and groundbreaking productions, this new musical promises to be no exception.
Featuring a strong intergenerational female voices including the award-winning Jamie Konchak, singer/actor/composer Allison Lynch, One Yellow Rabbit’s own Denise Clarke and introducing emerging artist of OYR’s educational program the beautifulyoungartists, Grace Fedocrchuk; Nightingale Alley is set to an original score by award-winning composer, David Rhymer in this compassionate musical about the lives of ladies of the demi-monde at the dawn of capitalism and promises to be a breathtaking experience that will leave audiences captivated from beginning to end.
Based largely on the lyrics of anonymous 19th century underground poets and minstrels – not the poetry of the refined and delicate, but the slashing and humorous words from the streets and alleys, distant echoes found in subversive broadsheets and pamphlets hawked in every London market place. The lyrics in this musical are over 200 hundred years old and speak with a curiously modern voice from a disarmingly compassionate female perspective. They stare deep into the erotic. They evoke the pleasures and delight of human appetite, but also its perils. The songs gaze – eyes wide open – on the clash of social values, of heartache and despair, and the darker, more disquieting aspects of an emerging and rather brutal underground economy.
Nightingale Alley is directed by Blake Brooker with music composed by David Rhymer and features performances from: Andy Curtis, Denise Clarke, Grace Fedorchuk, Jamie Konchak, Jonathan Lewis and Allison Lynch.
Nightingale Alley runs April 12 – 23 at Big Secret Theatre. Click here for tickets.
