World-class jazz comes to Calgary this June!

Festival headliners include Benny Green and the Brubeck Brothers. One of the leading jazz pianists of his generation, Benny Green, champion of straight-ahead bebop piano, appears with his trio in the gorgeous Studio Bell Performance Hall.

The Canadian Stage at Ironwood includes the hottest in jazz and soulful music from across the country! The festival kicks off on June 12th with Canadian legends The Shuffle Demons, and features the Dirty Catfish Brass Band, Canada’s darling of swing Alex Pangman, GRAMMY-winning Snarky Puppy drummer Larnell Lewis, and JUNO-nominated trumpeter/vocalist Tara Kannangara.

A great way to wind down from the week, start your Friday and Saturday evenings with a cocktail at the King Eddy to enjoy the sounds of the Jon Day Latin Project and the Kelly Steele Quartet.

The Up Close and Personal series, held Thursday and Friday at Lolita’s Lounge, brings you the smooth sounds of newly returned Terra Hazelton and Montreal’s Dominique Fils-Aimé.

The Late Night series at the King Eddy begins at 9:30pm and includes a mix of traditional and contemporary jazz from TD Grand Jazz Award winners Shpik Trio, JUNO nominee Elizabeth Shepherd, and Jon McCaslin’s special tribute to Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers.

This year’s Artist in Residence, award-winning pianist Dave Restivo, hosts three jam sessions that encourage the top players from Calgary to show off their talents with of the greatest jazz pianists in the world. Shpik Trio host the weekly Kawa jam, giving the opportunity for the local community to play with some of Montreal’s brightest rising stars.

Workshops by jazz experts bring new knowledge to the public at the Drop-In Zone in the National Music Centre. With topics from the origins and future of jazz, to improvisation and a drum feature, these free talks bring you up close and personal with some of the artists in the festival.

Plus, the annual Jazz Walk is back! On Sunday June 18th, an afternoon of free, family-friendly jazz takes place in numerous fine retail shops and restaurants along the Music Mile.
