This year marks the 20th anniversary of send + receive: a festival of sound, Winnipeg’s annual festival dedicated to sound art and experimental music and one of the longest running festivals of its kind in Canada. For complete details about send + receive and this year’s events see sendandreceive.org. To celebrate the twentieth anniversary of our festival, we open with a very rare occurrence… There are certain artists who occupy a realm that is truly their own. Tonight’s guest of honour is likely one of the first artists that we think of with this in mind. Since the late 1960s, Keiji Haino has been crafting his own unique music that he perceives as “all music.” Haino is infamous for his ear-piercing and dynamic electronic concerts, but there are innumerable facets to his incredibly deep output. Tonight, he will present one of his rare and very special acoustic percussion events. In his words this event is “‘beat’ and ‘rhythm,’ constructed through conscious engagement with the dynamic range of the strength, length and speed of each note.” This is metaphysical music — free and spontaneous, mesmerizing and utterly confounding.
