FALL/FLOW Sandra Vida June 1 – 29, 2018 | EMMEDIA Screening Room – 2005 10 Ave SW Gallery hours: Tuesday – Saturday @ 12-6PM Opening Reception: June 1, 2018 @ 7-10PM FREE Admission Sandra Vida’s new video installation FALL/FLOW grows out of a previous series of works in which the artist explored life’s thresholds, transitions, and passages. This new work continues the idea of integrating the viewer within the video image, conjuring up the experience of immersion in the natural world. Viewers pass through layered screens alive with softly descending images that invoke both the tranquility and fragility of the element of water. A range of metaphorical associations are invoked and welcomed in a subtle way through faintly seen text incorporated throughout the changing montage of imagery. Evocative sound suggests human voices expressing emotional longing and spiritual promise. Born in Calgary, Sandra Vida is of Scottish Celtic background. Her prolific body of work over more than three decades has included photo-based collage, performance, film, video and installation, and has been exhibited locally, nationally and internationally. She has recently focused on multi-media installation including aspects of sculpture, sound, video projection, and digital collage. In addition to her art practice, she is known for her dedication to other artists through Calgary’s artist-run centres and as an advocate for the arts and arts groups. She has been nominated twice for a Governor-General’s award in media arts, was one of 3 short-listed for a Marion Nicoll Art Award, and received the Epcor Established Arts award from Calgary’s Mayor for her dedication to the Calgary arts community.
