Onesie Noon Walk for Mental Walk - image

This week is the 67th CMHA Mental Health Week, which focuses on breaking the stigma and discrimination that comes with mental health issues. As part of it, there’s a Get Your Onesie On Walk set for Thursday, May 10 at noon in Stuart Park. “One in five Canadians live with mental health problems, mental illness or addiction,” says a release from the CMHA.“But the reality is, five in five of us have mental health, just like we all have physical health.” That means even if you haven’t personally struggled with a mental health illness or challenge, you probably know someone who has. Mental health issues indirectly affect every Canadian. And out of the 1 in 5 people who will struggle with mental health this year, only 20% will actually receive treatment according to CMHA Kelowna. All of us have mental health that needs to be celebrated, protected and promoted. Mental health plays an important role in being able to live a meaningful life, work productively, build strong relationships and give back to the community. So, this May we’re challenging you to #GETLOUD about the importance of mental health. May 7th to 13th is mental health awareness week. Teresa May of Cherry Lane Homes started a fundraising initiative last May challenging other businesses, universities and schools to support the Canadian Mental Health Association in Kelowna (CMHA). She hopes to see this continue year after year into a national event during Mental Health Week and again each October 10 on World Mental Health Day.”Wouldn’t it be nice when there is no such stigma as mental health, when it is just the overall well being of a person that is being treated whether it is physical or mental?” May said How can you get involved and help support mental health awareness and the CMHA? By wearing a onesie. That’s right, a onesie. We’re challenging you to wear your favourite onesie to work or school during mental health week! Help us raise awareness and funds by taking the following steps: Make a donation to the CMHA (follow this link http://hiil.it/2H8BxUu) Post a photo of yourself wearing your onesie to social media Challenge three friends to do the same You can also hashtag #GETLOUD and #GetYourOnesieOn to join the conversation. Send out the ripple effect of kindness! If social media isn’t your thing, you can choose to join us for an hour-long walk on May 10th at noon. Wear your onesie and meet us at Stuart Park by the bear. Again, you can donate in advance http://hiil.it/2H8BxUu or bring $10 suggested donation or more on May 10th, just mark the envelope Get Your Onesie On. Any amount of $20 or more will receive a tax receipt. If you have questions, feel free to call Teresa at 250-469-2928 or email mayhaveitall@gmail.com
